Mandatory pre-paid taxi fares between 10:00pm and 5:00am were introduced in Melbourne on 1 October 2008.
|
This measure is being implemented because of the large number of people who avoid paying taxi fares (‘do a runner’) during these hours. Fare evasion is costing $1.7 million in lost driver income each year.
|
Whilst the vast majority of taxi drivers will administer the system fairly, there will be some who might abuse the system.
To help stop local residents being exploited, Alistair has put together a guide on your legal rights with regard to taxi travel.
|
| What to do if you think you've been expoited | |
If you believe that a taxi driver has failed to meet their legal obligations or has exploited the pre-paid fare system, please ring 9320 4300 or 1800 638 802 and report the incident immediately. This 24 hour service is available 7 days a week.
It is only through your actions that the Victorian Taxi Directorate can ensure quality taxi services are provided across Victoria.
|
| Taxi driver's have rights too | |
Remember, just as you have a legal right to courteous, efficient and fair taxi services, a taxi driver has the right to refuse passengers who are violent, noisy, misbehaving, offensive or consuming alcohol.
If you wish to know more about your rights or to discuss Melbourne’s taxi services give Alistair's office a call on 9783 9822.
