1,966 more police on our streets

Investing in more police is the best way to keep our communities safe. That’s why today the Brumby Labor Government announced the biggest single one off boost to police numbers in Victorian history.

This boost will deliver 1,966 additional frontline police over five years to make our streets and communities even safer.

This announcement is on top of the extra 1,400 additional police recruited between 1999 and 2006 and the 350 police the Government promised at the last election and is well on our way to delivering.

On top of this, earlier this year we boosted our existing commitment by a further 120 frontline police so Chief Commissioner Overland could establish the new Operational Response Unit.

We will also invest $22 million to employ 55 on-the-ground youth workers, to introduce a new behaviour change program for young people carrying knives and also support police dealing with young people in crime hotspots.

There will also be an additional $49.9 million over two years to Victorian Legal Aid to provide legal representation to underprivileged members of the community.

These announcements are on top of the other steps our Government is taking to make our communities safer.

Police have been given additional powers to tackle crime including:

Tough new search powers for knives and other weapons
Moving on or banning troublemakers from entertainment precincts
Crushing hoons cars under our new anti-hoon regime which is amongst the toughest in Australia.

John Brumby and Alistair are determined to recruit more police, pass tough laws and work with the community to turn around alcohol related crime and antisocial behaviour.
